The Desert-Yellow River (Shapotou) Tourist Resort in Zhongwei has been officially recognized as one of 22 new National Tourist Resorts by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China. This designation is granted based on the national standards for Tourist Resort Rating and the Measures for the Administration of National Tourist Resorts, after the candidates are chosen through recommendations from provincial, municipal, and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) cultural and tourism authorities.
Located on the edge of the Tengger Desert west of Zhongwei City, the Desert-Yellow River (Shapotou) Tourist Resort spans 13.25 square kilometers.
